old Salman Rushdie, Ha Jin's Waiting. My favorite
book is Vikram Chandra's Love and Longing in Bombay.
Flaubert's Sentimental Education is brilliant.
Lately? Eugenides's Middlesex, Ondaatje's
Divisidero, Edmund White's memoirs (great,
actually), Michael Pollan, Michael Chabon.

Talking to my almost-illiterate, married-at-thirteen-year-old
grandmother and realizing she was way smarter than I would
ever be.

Okay, so this is not a celebrity resemblance, actually
(unless you are a huge fan of cheese) but yesterday a male
friend of mine compared me to Gouda. "Why, "
I asked, "because of my waxy red coating?" "No,
" he replied. "Because you taste sharper than
you look." I thought it was an apt metaphor.
The best or worst lie I've ever told
When I was working on an archeology dig, I jokingly told
a tourist that we had found the head of the Winged Victory
(Nike of Samothrace -- you know the one in the Louvre?).
The next week, television crews showed up -- they had trudged
all the way from Paris to this tiny Greek island. Needless
to say, my boss was not pleased...
If I could be anywhere right now
In bed, with someone beautiful, spent and exhausted. Nothing
more complicated than that.
