life is better - scarier, deeper, more complicated, more interesting - when it's shared.
i believe the ability - the willingness - to be thrilled is a gift.
riding the beach path in santa monica, sweet peaches, a day with friends, music outside, a beautifully written sentence...these things thrill me.
best day of the year? thanksgiving: a house full of food, family, friends. and boardgames. (weird, i know, but it's my idea of heaven)
My Ideal Person:
someone who gets the joke. someone who takes it seriously and shrugs it off at the same time.
someone unafraid to want what they want and be who they are. someone who's figured out a few things but still asks interesting questions.
a smartypants, probably - someone feisty/knowing/passionate/appreciative/a rticulate. (a tiny bit of poetry-in-the-soul would be nice, too.) the thing is, it's all magic: whatever it is that makes things work between people is unquantifiable and unknowable (no matter how many lists we make). it's about taking chances (so, someone brave would be good, too).
an easy ability to laugh really hard helps a lot.
The last great book I read fran leibowitz used to say she was promiscuous - she was a slut for literature. i love that line. i read a lot. some favorites: early larry mccmurtry/early john irving, the brothers wolfe - tobias and geoffrey, THE PHANTOM TOLLBOOTH, almost anything by wiesel, some philip roth, i just read "the girls" by lori lansens, and thought it was surprisingly lovely (alternating chapters told by conjoined twins - completely engaging, beautifully written, makes the humanity of something "other" very real).
My most humbling moment my brother's death.
Favorite on-screen sex scene bull durham. the big easy.
The best or worst lie I've ever told no, really, it's nothing.
If I could be anywhere right now outside, definitely. someplace open and breathtakingly beautiful. tropical. just a bit humid. dusk is nice. music's playing somewhere and the right guy is close. of course, santa fe, the greek islands, italy, maui, san fransico, and fenway park are also good.
Five items I can't live without books, music, cellphone, sunday nyt crossword puzzle, endlessly self-replicating peanut butter oatmeal raisin cookie
